Chernobyl disaster: 25 years after

25 years has gone this year since the Chernobyl disaster. The most serious accident in the history of nuclear power occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on April 26, 1986.

31 people were killed immediately after the disaster and 600 thousand liquidators who participated in putting out fires and clearing the nuclear debris received high doses of radiation according to official data.
Almost 404 thousand people have been relocated from their homes. Chernobyl nuclear power plant operations as a producer of electricity, has been discontinued December 15, 2000.
Experts estimate that the total yield of radioactive materials totaled 50 million curies, equivalent to 500 nuclear explosions of the bomb dropped in 1945 on Hiroshima.
The total area of the contaminated territories of Ukraine was 50,000 square kilometers.
